Rotting garage, clever post-punk and fascinating cold and other wave.
Meltheads are four young dogs from Antwerp who go to the bone with loads of talent and just as much drive and swagger. Propelled by the metronomically tight rhythm section of Tim Pensaert (bass) and Simon de Geus (drums), and spurred on by the sharp and virtuoso guitar of Yunas de Proost, Meltheads spits out catchy garage, clean post-punk and fascinating cold and other wave, which is indebted to The Chats, Amyl and the Sniffers, Gang of Four, Wire and – yes – De Brassers and Aroma Di Amore. Fourth dog is frontman Sietse Willems, the incarnate bastard of Jim Morrison’s charisma, Robert Plants sex appeal, Iggy Pop’s fury ánd the bare bark of all three.
Their live reputation buzzes through the Low Countries like a running hour, and those who have already seen them at work know: these hungry wolves storm a stage as if they are going to play the last show of their lives. Meltheads already opened for the likes of DIRK. and Millionaire, played a sold-out release show at Trix Café (where they are also residents), made it to the finals of Studio Brussels’ De Nieuwe Lichting and the stage (silver!) at Humo’ Rock Rally. Yet for them, no, it’s all yet to begin. And count on it going forward then.
Support act: Maria Iskariot
Maria Iskariot is the patron saint of debatable behavior. It’s semi-adult female punk rock from Flanders. Hopeful hopelessness in noisy stanza, chorus, stanza. Love for the unloved, figs after Easter, but primarily a knee-jerk reaction to sinners.
The songs are about growing up, being unable to distinguish right from wrong, being confused by yourself and the conditions of this time. It’s about wanting to be different, but not knowing how – and ultimately realizing that we too are benevolent assholes. THE promise of Willy, to be discovered in our auditorium this month.
